In addition to doing my MSc this year, there are a number of things I want to learn how to do. Basic web skills really, that I’ve avoided having to pick up but now feel a little held back by not knowing.
So, by the end of this year I will have…
- Installed Ubuntu Netbook on an old laptop and set it up so that it’s secure enough for my kids to use.
- Learnt enough about CSS to be able to adapt/create my own Posterous theme.
- Set up an install of WordPress or Buddypress
There’s reasons behind each of these. For 1) my daughter is pestering me to give her my old laptop but it’s clogged up and creaking and I’ve lost the Windows install disc. Also, I’m curious to see how an open source OS functions and what you can tinker with.
For 2), I’m getting more fond of Posterous as a potential home for this blog and if I can develop my own theme that will help me feel I more ownership of it (even if they are hosting it).
For 3), this is partly for my MSc course. We discussed at a recent course conference how we could maintain contact between the year cohorts and with alumni and it struck me that Buddypress was a potential fit for that and can be tailored closely to what the students want to achieve.
Considering I’m surrounded by people who can do this sort of stuff in their sleep, it seems as good a time as any!

If you need any help with Ubuntu I’d be happy to help. (e.g. have you considered Edubuntu instead of Ubuntu Netbook?)
I hadn’t to be honest, Steve. There seem to be quite a few flavours and given who is going to be using it (6yo daughter), the Edu version makes sense. There seems to be a lot of love for the new version in various blogs. Thanks for the offer of help.
