Blogging

This blog is broken. While content-wise that has been arguable since its inception I’ve been having problems with WordPress  botching up the formatting which has made me reluctant to post anything as it takes me ages to fix.

It has spurred me on though to try and understand more of how WordPress works so Steve in the office has been helping me install a version of WP on a memory stick so I can experiment with themes, plugins and tinkering with the CSS. I quite like the look of Graphene but want to tailor the look and feel a little more before I swap over.

MSc

We’re coming to the end of the first semester so it’s essay time. Our question is (deep breath):

“Discuss, in relation to learning environments that are enhanced via technology, and with reference to appropriate literature, the statement: ‘learning always takes place in social contexts but is inevitably an individual achievement‘.

I’ve gone through about 4 revisions now but after a really positive tutorial a few days ago I think I’m on the right track. I’m looking at ecologies of learning environments for informal professional development and ways of trying to describe what is actually happening in them. Guy Merchant who’s tutoring me on this suggested some work by anthropologist Christine Hines on “Virtual Ethnography” as a way of doing this. Could it actually be that the 2 years I spent struggling with social anthropology as an undergrad are about to deliver some benefits after 18 years!

Deadline’s on the 3rd Feb, so busy week ahead.

We’ve probably had our last Adobe Connect session with tutors Richard Pountney and Guy, which I’ve realised with a growing sense of regret. I’ve really enjoyed these 2 semesters with them at the helm. They were lots of fun and I feel like my knowledge and thinking has come on significantly in the last 12 months.

At work

Work is mostly taken up with writing training materials for Netskills at the moment. I’m focussing on blogging, social bookmarking and a few other things.

The ePortfolio Amplifier project is going well. I’m pleased with the number of subscribers to the blog and the number of retweets. Posts that have got the most interest have included WordPress as an eportfolio platform and what the uncertainty over Delicious means for people constructing distributed eportfolios using freely available web tools.

Trying to balance adopting a personal, informal tone with tweeting in an official capacity is tricky and I hope I’m getting it right.

On a personal note…

I’ve offered to design my first website for someone. If it goes ahead I’ll be using WordPress to design a site for a choir in Northumberland. It’s a favour for my father-in-law, which is fair considering how much help with DIY he’s offered us over the last 6 months.

I picked up a double bass for the first time this weekend. Pleased that I was able to get my tuning sort of OK but Charlie Mingus I ain’t.
